Baby It’s Cold Outside: Australis Nail Colour in ‘Sweetpea’ NOTD

0S7A0669I’m very excited about two things at the moment: one is that I now have enough time to start blogging again, and the other is that the weather is finally starting to cool down, so I can break out the jeans, jumpers, and these brill hand warmers. On my nails is a beauty-blogger favourite that I’m loving sick at the moment: Australis Nail Colour in ‘Sweatpea’ ($7.95 AUD). The pastel mint cream is a bit brighter than most pastel nail polishes, which stops it from ever looking streaky, and it’s pretty opaque, so you’ll only need two coats. Ah, the cozy life.

0S7A0673P.S. Speaking of the weather cooling down, I recently wrote a guest post for the Sukin blog, talking about why I love incorporating rosehip oil into my Autumn skincare routine. Check it out!

Hello Darling 5-Free Nail Lacquer in ‘In the Navy’ NOTD

Hello Darling Nail Polish in In The Navy

The kind of colour that’s approved by mothers, fashionistas, governments and The Village People alike. Ahoy there, sailor!

Because it’s three-thirty in the afternoon on a Wednesday after a public holiday, here is a picture of my favourite blue nail polish, Hello Darling 5-Free Nail Lacquer in In the Navy ($18.95AUD). I love it because – thanks to a brightened blue base – In the Navy always looks like a deep inky blue, never black. Hello Darling are a female-led Sydney start-up nail polish brand, whose products are vegan, animal testing-free, and formulated without toulene, formaldehyde or formalehyde resin, DBP or camphor.

P.S. I got double good karma points for the top I’m wearing in this picture. It’s from my favourite sustainable fashion brand People Tree, and I bought it second-hand from eBay for $1AUD. SUPER SCORE.

A Sparkling Ocean Nails of the Day

Face of Australia 'Ocean Villa' & Essence 'Blue Connection'

I thought I’d mark my first day back at work for 2013 with nails from somewhere I’d rather be. This is two coats of Face of Australia Colour Pro Nail Enamel in Ocean Villa* ($6.95AUD), a bright ocean blue that dries to a semi-mate finish, topped with one coat of Essence Colour and Go Nail Polish in Blue Addicted ($2.75AUD), a sheer navy with bright blue micro-glitter and light blue and sea green hexagonal glitter (also featured here).

I spent the last weekend of my holidays at a party at Johanis’ parents’ house in my hometown. I spent most of the weekend draped on this blow-up lounger, floating aimlessly in the pool, surrounded by bunting. A bunting explosion. More bunting than you could poke a stick at. Seriously, I’ve never seen so much bunting in my entire life.

If you’re heading back to work today, what did you do with your last weekend of freedom? And how are you coping today?

New Year’s Eve Nails of the Day

Mirenesse Bullet Proof Nail Lacquer in Charleston Me

It’s time to get glittery! This is two coats of Mirenesse Bullet Proof Nail Lacquer in Charleston Me* ($29.95 AUD) — a complex mixture of purple and silver micro-glitter in a darkened purple base —  topped with a coat of ELES Mineral Makeup Rapid Dry Finish* ($21 AUD). If the finish looks slightly lumpy, it’s probably because I’m slovenly and painted over the top of my chipped Christmas manicure.

Happy New Year’s Eve!

Couleur Caramel Nail Polish in Rose Mat NOTD

Couleur Caramel Nail Polish in Rose Mat

Choose from amongst a multitude of shades, a nail polish that suits your outfit and mood. Apply an even coat over the Nail Hardening Base or Protecting Nail Double Base for optimal hold. Paraben free, toluen free, formol free and rosin free.

This is Couleur Caramel Nail Polish in Rose Mat ($11.95 AUD/4mL). Yes, it is almost unbearably adorable. My face involuntarily scrunches up every time I look at it. Couleur Caramel is a certified organic French beauty brand, who aim to produce beauty products that respect animals, humans and the environment. I’ve blogged about and given away their Nail Hardening Base and Protecting Nail Double Base before. I know that their products are expensive, but I think they’re genuinely worth the cost.

Rose Mat is a semi-sheer, cool milky pink with a flash of blue shimmer:

I think the cool tone and the wee bit of extra coverage stop my nails from looking dirty, like they often do with sheer pink nail polishes (OPI Nail Lacquer in Bubble Bath, I’m looking at you.) Here, I’m wearing three thin coats of Rose Mat while casually clutching this prop pear in my yard:

Rose Mat was generously provided as a gift by Echolife Australia, the natural health and beauty retailers. Unfortunately, although they have a range of Couleur Caramel products available, Rose Mat isn’t one of them. However, it seems to be available directly from the Australian Couleur Caramel website.

Essence Colour & Go Nail Polish in Blue Addicted NOTD

Essence Color & Go Nail Polish in Blue Addicted

I didn’t buy Essence Colour & Go Nail Polish in Blue Addicted ($2.55 AUD) because it’s an uncannily close Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Across the Universe dupe, I bought it because it reminded me of sunshine on the deep blue ocean on a perfect day… and because it cost $2.55. Blue Addicted is a semi-sheer navy jelly with large hexagonal and small flecks of green and blue glitter. It’s easy peasy to apply and build up to a surprising level of opacity, if you wanted. This is three coats. Blue Addicted‘s finish was a little flat, but ‘squishiness’ was restored with a glossy clear topcoat.

Bloom Classic Mini Nail Polish Set [Christmas 2011]

Four classic must-have mini Nail Polish shades in our famous high-shine, chip resistant formula.

Released for Christmas 2011, Bloom Classic Mini Nail Polish Set ($24.95 AUD for 4 x 9mL) contains four timeless colours: Millie, Kim, Edie and Toni. The set is packaged gorgeously but, hand-to-heart, my set’s packaging was squished and smudged beyond recognition in my car accident a couple of weeks ago. Instead you’ll have to look at them having a strangle little picnic in the park.

I’m not able to comment on the wear of these polishes yet, but they apply like a dream. Full sizes of all four shades are also permanently available for $19.95 AUD each – although at the moment Bloom is offering two full size nail polishes for $29 AUD (this discount applies in-store as well as online).

Millie is described as a ‘deep aubergine.’ It has a jelly finish and is my favourite in the set. Here is two coats:

Kim is described as a ‘creamy brown.’ In some lights this looks like milk chocolate, in others more taupe. Here is two coats:

Edie is described as a ‘scarlet red.’ It has a creme finish. Here’s two coats:

Toni is described as ‘a dew.’ Sorry? Dew is not a colour. Dew is a meteorological phenomenon. It is slightly sheer and has a cream finish. Here’s two coats:

Special offer: Some Australian beauty bloggers have had the opportunity to generate their own special offer codes for the Bloom website for use during the period of December 5th-19th. At Ponikuta there’s a code for a full-size nail polish with every $50 order, at Bless This Mess there’s a code for a free eye kohl with every $50 order, and at Me, My Best and I there’s a code for a $25 Bloom voucher with every $50 order. These are just the ones I’ve noticed, so if you’ve seen any others, let me know in the comments!

Review: ORLY ‘Precious’ Collection Spring 2011

For centuries, people around the globe have been enamored with lush fabrics, rare stones and extravagant finishes. ORLY celebrates the refined glamour of porcelain, the vibrant sheen of silk, and the lush sparkle of priceless gems with Precious. Lend a sense of romance and richness to every spring ensemble by sporting lavish shades on fingertips and toes. The six lacquers in the Precious collection signal a fresh approach to spring fashion and a renewed appreciation for the exotic workmanship, ornamental engravings, and sumptuous fabrics known to accompany the luxe life.

Doesn’t that sound just dreamy? As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the new ORLY Spring 2011 nail polish collection, called Precious. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside that ORLY Australia is so ready to get behind the ‘cottage industry’ bloggers and tweeters out there. This romance-inspired collection comprises of six new nail polish shades, which borrow from a rich and varied colour palette ranging from a creamy porcelain to a shimmery peacock purple-blue.

The Precious collection was my first experience with ORLY nail polishes. I’m not sure how much these nail polishes will retail for, but their permanent shades retail for $18.95 AUD. I was pleased to learn that the polishes are ‘Three Free’ and was even more pleased when I applied them.

I really do like the ‘Gripper Cap’, which makes application easier for a nail novice like me. The brush was unremarkable yet completely functional. The formula itself is smooth and creamy, and I managed to apply it without too many streaks and splodges (for a newbie!). As you can see, my nails are really short and I don’t often wear a lot of nail polish, so please be gentle about my messy swatches!

I would actually wear any of these nail polishes, but my favourite shade was Ancient Jade, which reminded me a little of a slightly darker Chanel Jade. I also quite liked Sapphire Silk and Royal Velvet. I would say the collection is wearable by most skin-tones, but it does lean slightly cool. It’s also important to note that only two of the nail polishes are shimmery (and none are glittery) and the remaining are cremes – so if you are a die-hard glitter whore you might be disappointed here.

Pure Porcelain is described by ORLY as a beige creme. I would say that Pure Porcelain is a neutral lightened beige creme. It is sheer and wasn’t quite opaque with three coats, but was getting close to it.

Gilded Coral is described by ORLY as a coral gold shimmer. I would say that Gilded Coral is a warm metallic golden peach. It was reasonably opaque in two coats.

Fancy Fuchsia is described by ORLY as a pink creme. I would describe Fancy Fuchsia as a brightened hot pink creme. It is reasonably opaque in three coats.

Ancient Jade is described by ORLY as a green creme. I would describe Ancient Jade as a neutral jade green creme. It is reasonably opaque in two coats, this picture shows three coats.

Sapphire Silk is described by ORLY a a deep teal creme. I would say that Sapphire Silk is a cool, darkened teal creme. It is reasonably opaque in three coats.

Royal Velvet is described by ORLY as a purple blue shimmer. I would say Royal Velvet is a darkened, neutral grape purple that flashes fine blue shimmer. It is more purple than it looks in this picture, but the sunlight was picking up so much of the blue shimmer. It is sheer and was reasonably opaque with four coats.
